A good start does not need much.
Choose your vault, capture one thought, and give it a place later.

Three steps and your vault is in place.
On the Mac the vault is a folder you choose. On iPhone and iPad you select the same folder through the Files app.
The documented mobile state requires iOS or iPadOS 17 or later.
How do I do that?
Answers to common questions about working with ZimeZumi.
Connect thoughts spatially
On the Mac: right-click a life area or folder, then “New board”. Use “Sources” to bring in existing notes. A note card's link icon opens its reference view.
Adjust colours on the Mac
Settings → Appearance lets you choose Paper, Dark Paper, Dark or Follow Mac. “Custom colours” opens the Colour Lab: adjust background, text and accent; one slider shifts the hues of H1 to H3 together.
Link files or add them as attachments?
An attachment lives in the vault. A Finder link points at the original file. Media libraries connect local folders without copying their contents. The source has to stay reachable. The features overview explains how these fit together.
Find a PDF passage again
Mark a region in the embedded PDF and link the passage. The marker is stored in the note, the original PDF file does not contain it.
Set up the AI text actions
Install Claude Code or Codex on your Mac and sign in once with your Claude or ChatGPT account. ZimeZumi finds the program on its own. In Settings the AI card shows the status; there you choose the model and test the connection. Then select text and open the AI window with ⌘⇧K.
Embed a .md file
Drag the file into a note and choose “Markdown block”. The block stays linked to the original: “Refresh” brings in changes, “Unlink” separates it from the original. Hold ⌥ while dropping and ZimeZumi always asks.
Share content to ZimeZumi
On Mac or iPhone, select a photo, link or other attachment in its app. Open the share menu, choose ZimeZumi and save the content. Find it in your INBOX afterwards. On iPhone, the share extension needs its own permission for the same vault folder on first use.
Share a note with attachments
A text note's HTML export embeds local images and attachments; PDFs appear as downloadable attachments. Check the file before sending. PDF is a reading version, not a package of every original attachment.
Backup or Markdown export?
The HTML ZIP backs up the complete vault including configuration and attachments. The Markdown export creates a portable, simplified copy. Colours and interactive PDF markers survive in full only in the HTML backup. Back up external originals as well.
Look here first.
Five causes explain most cases.
Vault missing
Check the chosen folder and whether it is locally available; select it again if needed.
Image or PDF missing
Check the file it belongs to and whether it has been downloaded.
Note locked
Unlock it before editing. The padlock is write protection, not encryption.
Share extension
On iPhone, the share extension needs its own permission for the same vault. Choose the folder you also use in ZimeZumi.
AI connection
The AI card in Settings shows whether Claude Code or Codex was found and is signed in, and “Test connection” checks the route. For MCP, check the permissions in your client too.
Write when something sticks.
ZimeZumi is developed by one person. Feedback on workflow, interface and design helps most.
Useful details are the app version, your operating system and a short description. Please do not send passwords or a complete private vault.

Start with one note.
Everything else can be filed later. The features section shows what becomes possible after that.
ZimeZumi is a personal knowledge space, not a medical application. The ADHD experience shapes the design; no therapeutic benefit is claimed.
